The Russian American Magazin has always served Kodiak as a community center. As the Erskine House, it was tradition for newlywed couples to have their first dance in the building. As the Governor’s Mansion Boarding House, newcomers to the island were welcomed to the building and could call it their temporary home. Newlyweds continued to use the space for their traditional first dance and even stayed their first night together in the rented rooms upstairs. As time passed and the building became a museum, it’s used even more frequently and widely as a community gathering space.
The exhibit galleries, sunporch, and surrounding park grounds are available for private events. Staffing, seating, and special accommodations provided.
