Kodiak History Museum, located on Kodiak Island, Alaska is currently looking for a Curator to work closely with museum staff and supporters in a collaborative environment towards the development of innovative programs, exhibitions, and acquisitions.
In partnership with the Collections Manager, they are charged with developing a calendar of bi-annual temporary exhibits and pop-up exhibits co-curated with community partners which showcase projects/issues/ideas from the community.
The Curator works with Kodiak artists, historians, or organizations to increase access to the Kodiak Historical Society Collection and support research by both the museum staff and public interests. Building on this work, the Curator fosters relationships with donors and other museum supporters and actively pursues and recommends both historic and contemporary acquisitions.
The Curator brings knowledge into the museum and works closely with the Collections Manager to record/document/preserve and retrieve this knowledge, and helps to conceive and implement academic and public programs building on the exhibitions and acquisitions to make a meaningful connection for museum audiences. As a thoughtful member of the museum team, the Curator will bring in-depth knowledge of history and museum practices to assist in implementing an exciting vision for the museum. The Curator works closely with both the Development Manager and the Executive Director to establish a vision and financial goals for the exhibitions, and plays a key role in securing grant opportunities related to project work, tapping into public programs, exhibits, and collections-related private, state, and federal grant funding.
1. Conduct research with community partners and individually on modern themes as well as historic.
2. Implement grant writing.
3. Develop educational classes, workshops and training materials for volunteers,.
4. Develop temporary exhibits in conjunction with public programming and lectures.
5. Install exhibits
6. Contribute to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds.
